Ricoh announces its endorsement of the Cancun Communiqué on Climate Change
Ricoh Company, Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Kondo) endorsed the Cancun Communiqué on Climate Change, that calls for an ambitious, robust and equitable global deal on climate change, ahead of the 16th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 16) held in Cancun, Mexico in December 2010.
The Cancun Communiqué is an initiative of the Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders' Group on Climate Change which is run by the University of Cambridge.
< President's Statement >
Global warming is having a disastrous impact on the planet and large-scale climate related crises are increasingly seen around the world.
However, I am personally convinced that we are still at a stage where we can turn this problem around by 2050 if enough sensible people unite around the world in a common cause.
Climate change is an enormous problem which cannot be solved solely through the effort of a few countries and corporations.
It is of paramount importance that many enterprises address this issue seriously in their communications and visions.
< Gist of the Communiqué >
The Cancun Communiqué calls for global agreement on the following five key areas of action:
1. Energy efficiency across all sectors
2. Low carbon energy systems
3. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
4. Emissions from other greenhouse gases
5. Urban planning, land use management and land use change
< Reasons for Ricoh's endorsement >
Ricoh aspires to help create a sustainable society in which the environmental impact of society is reduced and maintained within the self-recovery capacity of the Earth, so as to pass a sound, rich-in-nature global environment down to future generations. Toward this end, we believe that collaboration between industrialized and developing nations is crucially important. We found the Cancun Communiqué useful for this purpose and thereby endorsed it.
